SCHEDULE ONLINEEngine repair in Star Prairie starts with figuring out what your engine is trying to tell you, from a rough idle to a ticking noise to a temperature gauge creeping up. At TinJToo Auto Repair, we diagnose and repair engines in the Asian and domestic models that fill Star Prairie driveways, from compact cars to minivans and half-ton pickups.
Long commutes on WI-64 through New Richmond, subzero cold starts and summer cabin trips all put real stress on an engine. We test before we replace anything, show you what we find with photos and video, and give you straight advice on the repair. When repair no longer makes sense, we talk through a complete engine swap.
The most common signs you need engine repair are a rough idle or shaking, loss of power, new knocking or ticking, oil leaks, colored exhaust smoke, hard starting and a rising temperature gauge. Catching these early often means a smaller repair, since engine problems tend to spread to other parts when ignored.
Smoke color is a useful clue. Blue smoke usually means oil is burning. Thick white smoke with a sweet smell often means coolant is getting into the cylinders, which can point to a head gasket. Black smoke means the engine is running rich, with too much fuel. Watch for any of these:
Many of these also turn on the check engine light, which gives us a starting point for testing. Jot down when each symptom shows up, since timing helps the diagnosis.
Pull over safely and shut the engine off if the temperature gauge climbs into the red, steam comes from under the hood, or the oil pressure light comes on. Driving even a few miles with no oil pressure or a badly overheating engine can ruin bearings, warp the cylinder head and turn a fixable problem into a replacement.
A loud new knock is another reason to stop driving. Once the engine is off, let it cool before opening the hood. Then arrange to get the vehicle safely to our shop, and call us to let us know it is coming.
Expert tip: Check your oil level once a month with the engine off and the vehicle on level ground. Many engines burn a little oil between changes, and running a quart or two low adds heat and wear. Regular oil changes on schedule do more to prevent engine repair than anything else you can do.
Engines overheat when the cooling system cannot move heat away fast enough. The usual causes are low coolant from a leak, a stuck thermostat, a failing water pump, a clogged radiator, a broken cooling fan or a cracked hose. Engine repair for overheating means finding which part failed and checking for damage the heat may have caused.
Rubber hoses get brittle in our cold winters and can crack near the clamps. Water pumps often leak from a small weep hole before they fail completely.
The cooling system also runs your heater. If you have lost heat inside the cabin along with high engine temperatures, our AC and heating repair page explains how the two connect.
A head gasket seals the joint between the engine block and cylinder head. When it fails, coolant and oil can mix or leak into the cylinders. Timing belts and chains keep the valves and pistons moving in step, and a broken timing belt can stop the engine instantly and, on many engines, cause serious internal damage.
Signs of a failed head gasket include white exhaust smoke, coolant loss with no visible leak, milky oil and bubbles in the coolant reservoir. We test before recommending this repair, since the symptoms can overlap with other problems.
Timing belts are a maintenance item with a replacement interval in your owner’s manual. On engines where the timing belt drives the water pump, it often makes sense to replace both at the same time.
Expert tip: Find your timing belt interval in the owner’s manual and plan for it ahead of time. If you bought the vehicle used and have no record of the belt being changed, ask us to check. On many engines a snapped belt causes far more damage than the cost of replacing it on schedule.
Hard starting on cold Star Prairie mornings usually comes down to the battery, starter, fuel delivery or ignition. Subzero cold cuts a battery’s power at the same time thick oil makes the engine harder to turn. A weak alternator that never fully recharges the battery makes it worse, mainly on short winter trips.
We test the whole starting and charging system, since a new battery will not last long if the alternator is undercharging or the starter is drawing too much current. Fuel pumps and injectors can also cause hard starts and stalling, and worn spark plugs make a cold engine struggle.
Expert tip: Have your battery and charging system tested in the fall, before the first subzero week. A battery that starts the vehicle fine in September can quit without warning in January. If yours is several years old, a quick test is cheap insurance against a cold morning in the driveway.
An engine swap makes sense when the engine has major internal damage and the rest of the vehicle is still worth keeping. We weigh the cost of repair against a replacement engine, the vehicle’s value and mileage, the condition of the transmission, and how much rust is on the body and frame.
We do complete engine swaps when repair no longer makes sense. A Toyota RAV4 or Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with a solid body and a healthy transmission can have many good years left with a replacement engine. A vehicle with a rusted-out subframe, worn suspension and a failing transmission may not be worth the investment, and we will tell you that honestly.
Owner Jarred Berhow is ASE Master Certified, and he will walk you through the numbers so the choice stays yours. You can meet our technicians before you decide.
Engine repair cost and time depend on the problem, the engine design, parts availability and how much has to come apart to reach the failed part. A cracked hose is quick. A head gasket or engine swap takes much longer. For any of them, you see photos of the failed part and the full estimate before you approve the plan.
TinJToo Auto Repair offers a 4-year / 48,000-mile warranty on repairs. If your vehicle will be with us for a while, ask about a loaner vehicle. When the bill is more than you planned for, financing through EasyPay Finance lets you spread out the payments.
